BYD has become the first Chinese car brand to support Galaxy Watches as digital car keys. The company announced this feature earlier today, and it is a major advantage for Samsung's smartwatches over other Wear OS smartwatches. This functionality is currently limited to China as of now, but could expand to other markets soon.

The Chinese firm announced that the Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Watch 8, Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, and the Galaxy Watch Ultra can act as digital keys for BYD's cars via NFC. Users need to install the Samsung Smart Card app (version 5.1.38 or newer) and the BYD Auto app (version 9.3.0 or above) on their Galaxy Watch for this feature to work. Apparently, the key works within a second.

BYD, which is the world's biggest electric car company by sales, announced that its digital keys now work on three major platforms: Android, HarmonyOS (Huawei), and iOS. While it supports digital keys via Bluetooth, Cloud Key, NFC, and UWB, Galaxy Watches currently only support the NFC mode. After the digital key is created, it can be shared with family members and friends, and it works via both phone and watch.

Earlier this year, Samsung boss Jay Y. Lee traveled to China to meet the country's president Xi Jinping. During this business trip, he also visited BYD's headquarters in Shenzhen to improve the automobile parts partnership. This collaboration could be a result of Lee's meeting with BYD.
