Samsung has released a new software update for the Galaxy Watch 4 series. While the company has begun rolling out the One UI 8 Watch update for eligible Galaxy Watches, this new update is simply a security update. Nevertheless, it is a welcome update for Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic users.

Galaxy Watch 4 gets August 2025 security update

The Bluetooth-only variants of the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic have begun receiving a new software update that includes the August 2025 security patch. It is currently available in South Korea and could be released soon in other countries.

Although it doesn’t bring the latest (October 2025) security patch that is rolling out to Galaxy phones and tablets, it is still a welcome change, as it enhances the security of Samsung's first-generation Wear OS devices. The new update comes with firmware version ending IYI1. The detailed firmware versions for each variant is listed below.

    • Galaxy Watch 4 40mm (SM-R860): R860XXU1IYI1
    • Galaxy Watch 4 44mm (SM-R870): R870XXU1IYI1
    • Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 40mm (SM-R880): R880XXU1IYI1
    • Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 44mm (SM-R890): R890XXU1IYI1

If you have a Galaxy Watch 4 series device, you can check for the new update by opening the Wearable app and navigating to Watch settings > Watch software update > Download and install. After the update is downloaded, tap the Install now button to start the installation process.

There was confusion regarding whether the Galaxy Watch 4 series will get the One UI 8 Watch update. However, Samsung mentioned it to us that they will get the Wear OS 6-based update. However, there was no commitment on the update release schedule.
