Samsung has released several iconic smartphones since January 2020, including the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the original Galaxy Z Flip. But to my eyes, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which we reviewed more than five years ago, might be the most important and ambitious Samsung phone of the decade so far.
Why? Because, apart from being a good phone at launch, the S22 Ultra had a very steep hill to climb and enormous shoes to fill. It had to do the impossible and replace the Galaxy Note series, help Samsung make room for foldables, and introduce a Galaxy S Ultra formula that would be widely accepted.
Credit where credit is due. Samsung's foldables in the early 2020s also had their own steep hill to climb. Nevertheless, it's also fairly easy to get people excited over a brand-new form factor like the one the Galaxy Z Flip has. When the original Flip debuted in February 2020, there was nothing like it.
Even so, to my eyes, what the Galaxy S22 Ultra achieved is incredible. It wasn't a brand-new phone concept but a replacement for one of the most iconic phone lineups in the world. It could have been hated by everyone but ended up being accepted and appreciated.
People aren't easy to welcome change, but the Galaxy S22 Ultra has done the impossible and helped Samsung through one of the toughest decisions it has ever faced.
Short history lesson: At the beginning of the decade, to make room for the foldable lineup, Samsung decided it was time to let the iconic Galaxy Note series go.
However, at that time, Samsung may have not realized how many fans would be upset by the Note's demise. So, in 2022, the Galaxy S22 Ultra went on sale to fix everything and help everyone move on.
Of course, not everyone was pleased, but the Galaxy S22 Ultra was instrumental to Samsung successfully making the transition from the Note series to the Folds and Flips we love today. The Galaxy S22 Ultra filled the void left behind by the Note, and it did so almost seamlessly.
To top it all off, the Galaxy S22 Ultra marked the beginning of a new design language for Samsung's Ultra flagship phones. The 2025 Galaxy S25 Ultra may look fairly different today, but it is unmistakably a direct descendant of the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Just look at those cameras, and you'll see what I mean.

All in all, I can't say that the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the best phone of the decade. But in my eyes, it is, at the very least, one of Samsung's most important phones of the 2020s from a historical point of view.
If you own the Galaxy S22 Ultra, you could say that you own a piece of modern Samsung history. The S22 Ultra is not just another Galaxy phone. It is one that truly helped shape and push Samsung into a new era of mobile for another decade.
Its chapter will close soon. But even though the Galaxy S22 Ultra has one more major Android OS update in the pipeline before it retires, its legacy and the impact it had on Samsung's brand will live on even after One UI 8.
