Every app on your phone has its unique identity, reflected by its app icon. However, this visual variety could make your phone's home screen appear cluttered. To address this, Android 12 (One UI 4.0) introduced Themed Icons (Color Palette), a feature developed to create a consistent look for all app icons.

While this feature was initially opt-in until now, Android will automatically generate themed app icons in the future. This functionality is likely to extend to Galaxy phones and tablets.

Android 16 (One UI 8.5) could force themed app icons for all apps

With the release of Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1 update, Google has announced (via Android Authority) that Android will automatically generate themed app icons for apps whose developers have not submitted themed icons. It means that developers will no longer have control over the design of their app's icon if a user wishes to use a themed app icon.

If a user decides to enable themed icons, Android will use a colour filtering mechanism over the existing app icon to create a monochromatic themed icon. Google has made changes to the Google Play Developer Distribution Agreement (DDA) to reflect these changes to app icons. This legally binding agreement is required for app and game developers who wish to list their app on the Play Store.

Google has sent an email to app developers regarding changes to the DDA and themeable app icons. The company had given developers four years to implement themed app icons, but most did not. Consequently, Google is taking matters into its own hands to ensure a more consistent look for Android.

The company announced that a major update to Android 16 will be released by the end of this year. These improvements are likely to be available on Galaxy phones and tablets with the rumoured One UI 8.5 update. The Galaxy S26 series is said to be the first Samsung devices to run One UI 8.5, and themed icons for all apps could be introduced with these phones, and that could bring improved visuals.
