Samsung’s high-end smart front-load and top-load washing machines come with auto dispenser. It has two compartments, one for detergent and one of fabric conditioner or softener. Once you fill them with appropriate products, it will automatically dispenses certain amounts of the two liquids into the drum during every wash cycle. Once filled, it lasts for multiple wash cycles. The feature eliminates the need for you to manually measure and add detergent and conditioner to the washer during each wash cycle.
However, a few people might find that it consumes too much detergent and softener. Well, there’s a quick solution to the problem. Just go to the SmartThings app and set amount of detergent and conditioner that the washer should dispense during each cycle (along with customizing the concentration of the softener and water hardness). So, how do you do it? Read below to know the process and understand the various options in it.

Now, your Samsung washing machine should use significantly lower detergent and conditioner/softener. A few people might suggest you to dilute the detergent or softener with water, which should solve the issue. However, we recommend you not do this as it could change the chemistry of liquids as they sit with water for too long in the auto dispenser which could reduce their effectiveness.
Note that Samsung's non-smart front-load and top-load washing machines also come with auto dispenser. These models also allow you to customise the amount and concentration of detergent and conditioner and set the water hardness level, which you can change from on-board controls. As each model may have different set of buttons and menus, we are not listing the down the process for each of them here. You can check them out in the owner's manual.

Customize the amount and concentration of detergent and softener and set water hardness level in Samsung washing machine for auto dispenser
- Open the SmartThings app on your Android or iPhone device.
- Head to your washing machine.
- Scroll down and you should find ‘Dispenser 1’ and ‘Dispenser 2’ (the first is for detergent and the second is for fabric conditioner/softener).
- If your washer is using too much detergent, select ‘Dispenser 1,’ tap on ‘Amount,’ and if it is set to ‘High,’ change it to ‘Normal’ and if it is set to ‘Normal,‘ then change it to ’Low.’ If doing so doesn’t make enough difference then tap on ‘Water Hardness’ and if it is set to ‘Hard,’ change it to ‘Normal’ and if it is set to ‘Normal,’ then change it to ‘Soft.’ The lower the water hardness you select, the lower the amount of detergent the washer uses.
- If your washer is using too much conditioner/softener, select ‘Dispenser 2,’ tap on ‘Amount’ and if it set to ‘High’ then change it to ‘Normal’ and if it set to ‘Normal,’ then change it to ‘Low.’ If doing so doesn’t make enough difference, then tap on ‘Concentration’ and if it is set to ‘1x’ then change it to ‘2x’ and if it is set to ‘2x’ then change it to ‘3x’. The higher the concentration you set, the lower the amount of the softener the washer uses.
