Epic's long legal battle with Google has finally delivered relief to the company. Google had booted the Epic Games Store from the Play Store over alleged violations of its terms of service. Epic fired a lawsuit in response, claiming Google had effectively established a monopoly on the distribution of apps and games on Android.

A unanimous jury verdict in favor of Epic was delivered in 2023 but Google had appealed it. Google has now lost that appeal, with Epic CEO Tim Sweeney confirming that Epic Games Store on Android will soon be available again on the Play Store. Meanwhile, Fortnite still remains unavailable via Samsung's Galaxy Store.

Epic scores another major victory over Google

When Google removed it from the Play Store, Epic made the app available through its website, allowing Android users to side load it on their devices. Epic and Samsung had worked closely in the past. The Galaxy Note 9 got a timed-exclusive of Fortnite for Android in 2018. Samsung also made custom skins and ran promotions for the title.

The relationship soured when Samsung introduced Auto Blocker with One UI 6. This feature prevents sideloading of apps. Epic felt this was against its fight, so it decided to pull Fortnite from the Galaxy Store, even though it was its direct path to that vast majority of Android devices on the market.

Google now has three weeks to make the changes it has been ordered to make after losing the appeal. This means that the Epic Games Store may once again be available on the Play Store before the end of this month, allowing Fortnite players to easily download the game on their Android devices, including Galaxy devices. Google has said it intends to appeal this latest ruling, but that's likely going to be another lengthy process.

It remains to be seen if Epic will reverse course and bring Fortnite back to the Galaxy Store. It may not be too compelled to do so now, though, since it will be back on the Play Store anyway.
