With Apple’s AI efforts lagging behind the competition, the tech giant has finally decided, “after careful evaluation,” to partner with Google for its AI technologies. Apple and Google announced their new multi-year partnership yesterday, but Elon Musk doesn’t seem impressed.
In a reply on X, Musk raised concerns about the collaboration, saying that “this seems like an unreasonable concentration of power for Google, given that they also have Android and Chrome.”
For many, the comment didn’t come across as a neutral reaction to the Apple–Google deal. After all, Musk has his own stake in the generative AI market, having introduced Grok, his own AI model, two years ago.
From Apple’s side, the company said the partnership will allow it to use Google’s AI technology as the foundation for its Apple Foundation Models.
That said, Apple stressed that “Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.”
Samsung has already taken the lead in the AI race with Galaxy AI, while Apple has struggled to deliver on its promises. With Google now involved, however, Apple may finally start to close the gap.
One of the first major steps will be the rollout of a more personalized Siri later this year.
While the details of this collaboration are not yet known, a report last year said Apple was willing to pay Google nearly $1 billion a year for a custom model of Gemini AI for Apple Intelligence.
