Of all the upcoming devices Samsung is expected to release this year, Ballie is a bit of an oddball. Ballie made the headlines a few times throughout the year whenever Samsung put the spotlight back on it, but most people don't know what to make of the ball-shaped robot. In fact, Samsung might not know either.

Reports from Korea say Samsung is extra cautious about releasing Ballie because it is unsure how to position the robot in the market and what the people's reaction to it might be. It's a new product in an emerging category, and Samsung doesn't sound very confident in its release.

The last time Samsung mentioned Ballie, the company said that the robot ball would roll into the USA and Korea this summer. There's still time left to meet that deadline, but Korean reports say Samsung is reluctant to bring it to the market.

It sounds like Samsung isn't fully sure about Ballie

These recent rumors claim that Ballie is already complete and the hardware is ready to ship; however, Samsung is trying to refine it further and define Ballie's role in the AI smart home segment.

The robot's price is also a concern. Although Samsung hasn't mentioned anything about pricing, some industry watchers estimate that the rolling AI robot will cost upward of $2,000.

Since Samsung's other AI robot for the smart home, i.e., the Jet Bot Combo AI, costs $1,699, Ballie will become Samsung's most expensive device in the home robot category. But unlike the Jet Bot, Ballie can't clean floors or perform similar practical tasks. It's supposed to be more of a companion robot/SmartThings hub equipped with a projector and cameras. Ballie will be powered by Tizen OS and support Gemini AI.

All in all, Ballie will be a niche device, but Samsung might not be entirely clear about its launch strategy. An industry official cited by the Korean media pointed out that “technological advancement does not necessarily guarantee sales” and that Samsung is taking a careful approach to marketing and releasing Ballie.
