It was reported that the iPhone Air wasn't selling as well as Apple had hoped. Samsung experienced something similar with the Galaxy S25 Edge as its ultra-thin flagship didn't sell like hotcakes either.

Apple has now reportedly done what Samsung has for the Galaxy S26 Edge. The iPhone Air 2 has reportedly been taken off the schedule for next year, and that's bad news for the Galaxy S26 Edge.

Production expected to stop fully by next month

The Information is reporting, citing three people involved with the project, that Apple has notified engineers and suppliers “that they were taking the next iPhone Air off the schedule without providing a new release date.”

Apple had planned to launch the second iPhone Air in the fall next year alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold. The phone was reportedly going to be lighter and have a larger battery. It may also have the new vapor chamber cooling system that was introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro.

The report now mentions that Apple has “stopped short of canceling the next iPhone Air,” and that some engineers and suppliers are “still working on it.” The wait and see approach has been adopted because the iPhone Air sales haven't been good.

Foxconn, Apple's manufacturing partner for the device, is reportedly planning to end production of the device by next month. Luxshare, the second manufacturer, has already ceased iPhone Air product last month.

This is playing out for Apple exactly it has played out for Samsung. It appears that both companies overestimated the market demand for ultra-thin flagships and no longer see a business case for keeping them around next year.

Samsung had initially planned on replacing the Galaxy S26+ with the Galaxy S26 Edge in next year's lineup. That plan has now been dropped and the Galaxy S26+ is firmly back. A recent report has shown that Samsung does have a slim phone in the pipeline that it's working on, but it's believed to be different from the version that was meant to replace the Galaxy S26+.

It seems Samsung will wait and see what Apple does. If there's an indication that the iPhone Air 2 is coming, the company may move ahead with its plans. However, if Apple decides to not launch the device next year, then it's quite likely that the Galaxy S26 Edge may not see the light of day either.
