Earlier this year, Samsung announced its plans to launch its first companion robot, Ballie, in the summer of 2025. It won't be the only brand to launch a personal robotic device, though, as Apple reportedly has plans to take on Ballie with its own robot-like device, but it could arrive two years after the launch of Samsung's Ballie.

Apple's robot-like companion might launch two years after Samsung's Ballie

Over the past couple of years, multiple reports have claimed that Apple is working on a robot-like device that could double as a smart home control centre. A new report from Bloomberg sheds some light on this device. The report claims that Apple is working on two smart home devices: a touchscreen tabletop device and a touchscreen tabletop device that looks like a vertical iPad mounted on a movable robotic arm.

Similar to a human, the device with the robotic arm can turn the device's touchscreen display six inches towards the user to face them as they move around the home.

Both devices that Apple is working on will reportedly feature an improved version of Siri that can recall information, make suggestions, and participate in conversations. They run a new operating system that is internally called Charismatic, and it is designed to work with multiple users (like family members) in the home.

In internal tests, AI-powered Siri on the higher-end device is said to feature a cheerful personality and a visual representation that looks like an animated macOS Finder icon or an emoji. Both devices will be able to control music playback, smart home devices, host video calls, take notes, and browse the web.

Apple had the idea of robot-like devices in 2022, but started working on them only earlier this year. The simpler device of the two will reportedly launch in 2026, while the one with a robotic arm could be launched in 2027. This will give Samsung more time to think about how to improve Ballie.

Samsung isn't sure how to position Ballie

In comparison, Samsung first showcased Ballie back in 2020, but didn't launch it yet even after it received a massive makeover in 2024. Apparently, it isn't sure about how to position the Tizen OS-powered robot in the market and how people might react to it. It is expected to carry a price tag of at least $2,000. You can see it in our video below.

While the South Korean firm's current official stance is that Ballie will launch this summer in South Korea and the USA, the device might be delayed further. Hopefully, Ballie doesn't end up like the Galaxy Home smart speaker that was never launched after being announced.
