Apple is expected to launch its first foldable iPhone later this year, and it will compete with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. It has long been rumored that the foldable iPhone will exclusively use foldable OLED panels from Samsung Display. Now, it has been revealed that the upcoming device will also use Samsung’s memory chips (RAM).
A report from The Bell reveals that Samsung Electronics has received a purchase order from Apple for 12GB LPDDR5X RAM chips. It is not the only company that has received an order. Apple has reportedly placed orders with Micron and SK Hynix as well. However, thanks to Samsung’s higher production capacity, it has received the largest share among the three memory chip suppliers.
It is also being reported that Samsung Electronics will supply these memory chips to Apple at nearly double the price compared to last year. However, the iPhone maker appears to have secured a lower price than other clients, as it purchases memory chips in much larger volumes than its rivals.
There is currently a memory chip supply crunch, as most chips are being purchased by major technology companies such as Amazon, AMD, Google, Meta, and Nvidia for use in AI accelerators, data centers, and server farms. This leaves limited supply for consumer electronics devices such as smartphones. Due to the supply shortage, memory chip prices have doubled compared to last year.
