It was reported earlier this year that Android devices, Samsung Galaxy ones included, may soon gain a new feature similar to Apple's Handoff which allows for seamless file and app sync between Apple's smartphones, tablets, laptops, and wearables.
Google has been working on this feature for some time now. Additional information has surfaced about how this feature might work on Android devices.
It was reported back in August that Google was developing a feature called Handoff that will enable users to seamlessly pick up tasks where they left off across Android and Chrome OS devices.
AndroidAuthority has spotted a new Handoff menu in the Cross-device services settings on Android. The menu reveals that this Handoff feature will allow file and media sharing across devices. It has already been known that notification and app sync will also be supported.
The devices will need to be signed into the same Google Account for the Handoff feature to work. The feature will enable an app's current state to be transferred from one device to another.
For example, if you're using a note taking app on your Chromebook, you'll see a suggestion in the taskbar when you open that app on your phone that the handoff is enabled. If you tap on this suggestion, the handoff will be initiated and you'll pick up on the phone right where you left off on the Chromebook.
It's unclear when Google intends on launching this feature, but given that it wasn't included in Android 16 and it's significant enough to warrant its outing with a major release, it's likely that we may not see the feature being launched before Android 17.
