AMD CEO Lisa Su will begin her first business trip to South Korea since taking over the role in 2014. During her visit, she is expected to meet the heads of major business conglomerates in the country, including Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee.

Lisa Su is expected to reach South Korea next Wednesday. She could meet Lee to discuss semiconductor chip supplies and a deeper partnership. They could also discuss the supply of sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM4) chips and the potential use of Samsung Foundry to manufacture certain AMD chips.

AMD’s AI accelerators already use Samsung’s HBM memory chips, and the two companies partnered a few years ago to develop RDNA-based mobile GPUs for Samsung’s Exynos chips that are used in Galaxy phones and tablets.

Recently, Samsung Electronics became the first company in the world to ship HBM4 chips. These chips will be used in Nvidia’s next-generation AI accelerator system called Vera Rubin. Other companies, including AMD and Google, could also use Samsung’s HBM4 chips.

It is also being reported that the AMD CEO will meet Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon. They could discuss the use of AMD’s AI accelerators in Naver’s data centers.

The South Korean government wants to make the country a self-dependent AI powerhouse, and LG AI Research, Samsung SDS, SK Telecom, and Upstage will help build and develop the Sovereign AI ecosystem.
