Apple is yet to hit the 12GB mark for the RAM on its iPhones. The company has historically not felt the need to bump up the RAM significantly as it could deliver a refined user experience due to its sphere of influence on both the hardware and software, something that's difficult on Android devices.
However, the expansion of Apple Intelligence now requires the company to bump up the maximum RAM capacity on its flagship iPhones. Reports claim that the iPhone 17 will get 12GB of RAM, with Samsung providing the vast majority of those chips.
Earlier reports had suggested that the entire iPhone 17 lineup would get 12GB of RAM, but the latest claims that only the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models will get 12GB. The remaining models will make do with 8GB. This would put the top iPhone 17 models at par with the Galaxy S25 Ultra which offers 12GB RAM as standard, and even an optional 16GB in some markets.
AI applications are memory intensive as they need to process a large amount of data very quickly. Apple could probably make it work with even 8GB but then it runs the risk of degrading the user experience elsewhere, which is probably why it has now decided to upgrade the RAM to 12GB. It only jumped up to 8GB in 2023 with the iPhone 15 Pro.
The iPhone 17's success would work out well for Samsung. According to reports, Samsung Electronics will supply 70% of the 12GB memory chips required for the iPhone while SK Hynix and Micron will account for the rest. With analysts expecting 100 million units of the new iPhones sold, this means around 70 million would boast a 12GB memory chip made by Samsung.
