You could say that Samsung's brand-new Galaxy Z Fold 7 is different enough from its predecessors to mark the beginning of a new era for the Fold lineup. Although it lost a couple of things along the way, such as the Under-Display Camera and S Pen support, it gained design prowess and durability.

Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold 7 was engineered for everyday durability and built to last longer. The company describes the Fold 7 as a phone crafted for those who want the everyday portability of a traditional smartphone combined with the flexibility of a foldable device. For this year's model, Samsung went to great lengths to make the phone tougher.

Better durability is something everyone has wanted from foldable phones since the beginning, and year after year, Samsung made things a little better. But based on what Samsung told us at Unpacked, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has made significant progress in this area and really pushed the boundaries.

Galaxy Z Fold 7: Thinner, larger, lighter, stronger

The most impressive aspect of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is that, despite the larger 8-inch main screen, the phone is thinner, lighter, and promises better durability.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has an 8.9mm profile when folded, which makes it even thinner than the already thin Fold Special Edition. The Fold 7 is the slimmest Fold ever.

Furthermore, it is the lightest Galaxy Z Fold to date, weighing only 215 grams. That's 21 grams lighter than the Fold Special Edition and 24 grams lighter than the Fold 6.

Even better, the durability of the foldable screen is higher. In fact, the whole phone should be stronger. Samsung used all its engineering expertise and employed clever designs and better materials to achieve this. Examples include:

    • The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a new Armor FlexHinge: It is thinner and lighter thanks to an enhanced water droplet design. It has a new multi-rail structure that increases the foldable screen's durability by dispersing stress. It also reduces visible creasing.
    • The phone boasts a new Advanced Armor Aluminum frame and hinge housing. The new material increases strength and hardness by 10%.
    • The Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) layer embedded in the foldable screen is 50% thicker, which makes the display tougher.
    • The foldable display is now supported by a plate layer (backplate) made from titanium. Previously, Samsung used stainless steel and switched to carbon fiber for the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The Fold Special Edition was the first to use a titanium backplate, and now, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 does, too.
    • Samsung applied Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 on the cover screen and Victus 2 on the back panel.
    • The Galaxy Z Fold 7 employs new adhesive materials.

Samsung appears to have really put a lot of thought and energy into making the Galaxy Z Fold 7 stronger than ever. It sounds very promising, especially since durability has remained one of the main concern of foldable devices in general.

But, of course, we will have to wait for durability tests to see if Samsung's latest efforts truly paid off. So far, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 sounds like the most important leap in design and durability for the series.
