We've seen running Android operating system on several kinds of devices, including cars, phones, smartwatches, tablets, TVs, and XR glasses and headsets. Google didn't officially support laptops and PCs, but support for such devices is coming as soon as next year, and more details about it have now leaked.
Google is merging Android and ChromeOS into an operating system for laptops and PCs.
Google recently teased that laptops and PCs running Android OS are coming soon. Android Authority's report reveals that the upcoming operating system is internally called Aluminium OS. A job listing by Google states that the role involves ‘working on a new Aluminium, Android-based, operating system.' Similar to Android XR, the upcoming OS for PCs is said to be ‘built with artificial intelligence (AI) at the core.'
The job listing also reveals that Google won't be limiting Aluminium OS to affordable and mid-range devices like it does with ChromeOS. It will be designed for boxes (desktop PCs), detachables, laptops, and tablets across several tiers, such as Chromebook, Chromebook Plus, AL Entry, AL Mass Premium, and AL Premium. These devices will be made for consumers as well as businesses.

Google's job listing also reveals that the Senior Product Manager will be responsible to create a strategy to help Google transition from ChromeOS to Aluminium with business continuity. It means that ChromeOS-based Galaxy Chromebooks will eventually move to Android-based Aluminium OS.
It isn't clear if all existing Chromebooks will receive the Aluminium OS update. Devices that do not have qualifying hardware will likely receive support until their end of life, while models that qualify will be updated to Aluminium OS. It means Google have to keep maintaining both operating systems for a while.
Google is currently testing Aluminium OS on devices featuring the MediaTek Kompanio 520 and 12th Gen Intel Alder Lake processors. It means laptops with those processors and enough RAM and storage will likely get updated from ChromeOS to Aluminium OS. Google will likely continue using the Chromebook branding, though, as it has received enough branding recognition over the years.

Android-based laptops and PCs will likely launch in 2026, but it isn't clear whether they will start arriving in the first or second half of the year. Since Samsung is a close partner of Google, it will likely launch laptops and PCs running Android OS, as it will give the South Korean firm a chance to create an ecosystem of laptops, PCs, phones, smartwatches, tablets, and XR devices that are all running the same operating system with deep integration, similar to Apple's platforms.
